Menorca Boat Hire Without a Licence — The Rules End October 1, 2026

Licence-free boat hire in Menorca (≤5m, ≤15hp, daylight, ~2nm) is legal through September 30, 2026 — then the rental exemption ends. The last-season guide, and what replaces it.

Updated August 2026

The most useful thing this page can tell you has a date on it: Spain’s licence-free exemption for RENTAL boats ends on October 1, 2026. If a no-licence putter around a Menorcan bay is on your list, this is the closing season.

The rule as it stands (through Sep 30, 2026)

Anyone 18+ with ID may hire and drive a boat of up to 5 metres and 15 hp, in daylight, within roughly 2 nautical miles of the departure point. No test, no titulín. The port operators at Cala’n Bosch, Fornells and Cala Galdana built small licence-free fleets on exactly this rule.

What changes October 1, 2026

The exemption is being removed for rentals specifically — private and sporting use keeps the old allowance, but hired boats will require a nautical qualification, with a transitional period for operators and users to adapt. Practical translation for 2027 planning: licence-free HIRE disappears; skippered options continue unchanged, because the skipper is the licence.

(Grounded against Spanish maritime sources, August 2026 — if your plans straddle the date, confirm the final text with your rental operator.)

Why we sell the tours and not the hire

Honestly: the licence-free boats are booked at the port, not through us — we earn nothing on them and list the rule anyway, because sending you informed beats sending you converted. The route comparison treats all three options with the same candour.
